Ok, long time.
Well, dunno who checks anymore but I'm gonna blog again a bit.
Life here's been swell. Handed in the thesis, did very well at HW and will be continuing on with a PhD in about another month or so. Me and Sharon have been living together here at our Dalry road flat since September and all's been well. :-)
One little hitch in the past couple months was being jumped by 6 guys here in Edinburgh. Had a friend here from Mississauga and another friend from the Czech Republic here when it happened. Needless to say it was not a fair fight. Anyhow we're all well, just a few cuts, scrapes and bruises.
Since I last left a message here I've been to the Czech Republic (Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Dacice, Trebon, Telc and Mokra-Horakov), Slovakia (Poprad and Kosice) and went down to Bournemouth (in Devon, so south English coast) to visit some of Sharon's family too. So despite being out of school and not working at the moment I have been up to stuff. I'm also taking a wood carving class, which I have to say is definitely a lot of fun; I'm making a duck. :-)
I'll post pics from the trips below. Videos will get uploaded a little later, maybe with luck today.
Alrighty, I will now find pictures to share. Ok... blogger refused my pics there. I will try a video from Lomnicky stit in Poprad, Slovakia. (stit means peak in Slovak, we were on Lomnicky mountain, and later the peak.)
Delicious Slovak hot chocolate. No, not a rarity at a lovely mountain resort but rather the Slovak version of a drink I don't often have. Very thick, like Magic Moments TM chocolate pudding heated to 45C. Have a look.
Ooooo, you know those road-side Jesus temple thingies you see on Quebec highways? Even highway 6 has one on the way to Tobermory. Well, not much to our surprise, it seems almost everybody in the Czech and Slovak republics has decided they MUST have AT LEAST one on their property. Here is just one of the several million we must have seen between Cesky Krumlov and Mokra-Horakov.
Ok, gonna try pics again, this time just two. First is a view of Prague Castle (Hrad Cany, pronounced chany) and the second is from Poprad in Slovakia.

Cool, may post more pics from this trip and maybe some from our visit to the New Forest in Dorset later. I have pictures of a wizard. I KNOW you're all excited!
Cool, take care for the moment,
Dave

NIN and Foo Fighters in Edinburgh!
Hey there,
Saw NIN and the Foo Fighters last night and it was fucking great! :)
Pics and video for ya. Sound is shit in the videos but what the hell, here they are anyways.
Pics first:
The crowd.
Trent Reznor with guitar.
Trent Reznor singing with his laptop.
Now for videos. The NIN ones are 'bouncy' to say the least, I was up front in the pit. The Foo Fighters one is a bit more interesting, I added commentary to it so check it out. ;)

Spiegel Tent
It rained all day yesterday, really hard most of the time. Oh well, why should that stop us drinking?
Don't know why the sound didn't work but here is my buddy Scott's gig in the Meadows as a part of the Fringe Festival. His band is Jaded Playboy, they're on My Space if you're curious.
Here's Scott signing his first autograph. Awwww..... :)
Anyhow, waiting for my bike to arrive, looking forward to riding again......... been forever! Need to get on a bike again!
Living in the new flat too, got lots of space for guests too. Take that as an invite folks. ;)

Entry 67
Hallooooo.
Been busy, busy, busy with the thesis. Trial and error learning is FUCKING slow.
Oh well, only one day was shit so far. This week and next week until Tuesday are looooooong...... 10-11 hour days. But alas, some people do that everyday.
Pretty much got a flat lined up for me and Sharon too; today went well for me. :)
More on that some other time...
Alrighty, I should work more now. Gotta be productive!
Later,
Dave

Flats, mice & my thesis.
Flat hunting has been interesting so far... apparently I'm too prepared. Nobody here looks more than 1 month in advance generally and that means there's not so much available for late August/early September... yet. Still, if you look hard enough you seem to find them. I do owe the Student Welfare office at HWU a big thank you; they seem to be the only reliable place you can find private lets for the time period we're gonna need.
Stupid letting companies will want 6 months rent up front because me and Sharon wont be working when we move in AND we won't have a UK resident as a guarantor. Buggers...
We do have a mouse... not that I've seen it, just found poop so far. Also makes me wonder if it's the reason for the funny sour milk smell near the fridges... that could be sour milk though. I've vacuumed, swept out all around (inc behind) the fridges/freezer, no luck, still a smell. Oh well, gonna starve the mouse away, that's my plan, Tom's gone at the moment, which means a clean kitchen, and I hope the mouse gets the message. I am not leaving it a single crumb to munch on so I hope it decides to find greener pastures soon.
And the thesis, my life for the last three weeks. It's been getting along well, well enough to see all the problems that are gonna arise. Not gonna go into that, I could write you a 5000 word report on that before I knew I had.
I hope all's well.
Ooo, and if you want a custom T-shirt from Portugal (or maybe Brazil, I didn't see where) check the comments on my last blog. ;)

How does this work?
Look at the picture (NOT YET THOUGH!), it was taken here in Edinburgh.
This is like one of those kid's games you get on a place mat at somewhere like Pizza Hut. So, basically look at the picture and find what doesn't belong.

Flat hunting, mice, Billy Talent and (almost) a straight week of drinking
Hello, been a fun week.
Finished exams last Friday, went out caught some belly dancing at Octopus Diamond, then we narrowly avoided a fight with a stupified fella after the bar closed. Saturday was Scott's gig at Bannerman's in Cowgate, that was a blast, great location, awesome sound and fuck, Scott's getting good, was a great show. :)
Sunday we headed to Oni's, had a few beers, just chilled. A nice counter-point to the previous couple nights. Then Monday was Olga & Lenka's goodbye party for Tyler. Mmmmmm goulash and slivovitz. Took Tuesday and Wednesday nights off, worked on the thesis (it's going somewhere finally!) and got ready for Billy Talent.
Thursday was BT night at the liquid rooms, got prepped up with Scott, Ysella and the boys from Scott's band in Grassmarket. I figured I'd have a pint before the show... he he, 5 pints and a whisky later we were off to see BT. Nice show, really beena while since I managed to get front row at a show like that. Was wicked! Odd too, I had 10 years on nearly everyone in the audience... well, so did everyone I was there with too. :)
Last night was the last Whisky Soc for the year... ok, they start again in October, so not that long. Anyways, we had 4 bottles between the 10 of us, 1 40 year old, a cask strength (~62.5%) from somewhere in Speyside, god knows which distillery it was. Sweet stuff these two were. Never got the others open, Andy, the Whisky Soc president made the night free but after going over-time by 1 & 1/2 hours, felt opening them was better another time. After that we headed to Huw's for a kegger. One of the other 4th year's'd, Matt, had just got a job and his brewery sent him up a keg from Glasgow to celebrate. They also managed to score anther keg from the Caley, personal connections of some kind.
Also, at Huw's, one of the 4th year's, Scott (different guy) and I got to talking and he said he'd done an exchange during high school and stayed in Oakville. Random. He's even got an OT rugby jersey. Go figure, small world, eh?
Ummm... yeah, looking into other flats now too, getting all excited! Checking into Polwarth and Merchiston, both on my bus route and even closer to town. Better shops around too. Also, apparently we've got a mouse in the house! Fun shit. Oh well, I haven't seen it, probably never will but Tom ( the new guy here) said he was gonna buy some traps.
Well... I want to look online at flats. I hope you're all having a nice warm weekend wherever you are. ;)
Bye.
Dave
Ok, also, I WILL BE IN OAKVILLE this JULY 17th to the 1st of AUGUST. I know everybody's gonna be fighting to spend every minute they can with me so I thought I'd let you all know in advance. :P
But anyways, I'll call people when I get back or maybe if I get to it email??? I don't know who checks email, or if I have the right ones anymore... I'll put something on Facebook and there's this now. Oooo, I'm thinking maybe a weekend in Collingwood?
Perhaps the 27th, 28th, 29th?
We'll see, no idea what'll actually happen once I'm back on hopefully familiar Canadian-soil.
Later!

Ma knees, ma poor knees.
Hey,
So I've kinda had wonky knees since Rome, funny little discomforts when my knees are bent, random little reminders of how shit my knee/knees eventually felt during the Rome run. Started looking into it today, (been running a lot less, much more walking) but today I think I've confirmed that it's not the end of the world but I think maybe I've managed to give myself runner's knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, thank you Dr. Pribut) in both knees. :( / :)
I'm looking at this as a blessing in disguise. Gone are the days of running without considering what kind of effect it is having on my body. I used to stretch and warm up, stopped that, going to start that again now, also have a host of things that I've now found out I can do to help repair and also reduce the damage running can and will do.
I just felt that I'd like say that if anyone who reads this enjoys running at all, no matter if you run like a maniac or just casually on the weekend, check this website out, it seems to me to be about the best on the net:
http://www.drpribut.com/sports/sportframe.html
So, no pictures, no videos tonight, just a little "hello, this is what's up with me" info.
So now that I've explained how I'm going to fix my knees I'm off to wreck my liver again. Go figure, I guess it's true life's about dying. In this case it's my liver, little bit by little bit.
I hope everybody had a pleasant weekend. :)

Shit... found another, this one's from Rome
This is Rome, random communist protest I continually ran into as I learned my way around this part of the city. The previous video is Holyrood House Palace in Edinburgh, I'm there with my Mom and her friend Janet.

Ok, so one more video... :)
I was able to let it upload while I studied. Multitasking, not my strong point but I managed to. ;)

No Will, screw you! :P
I'm blogging more again, and now with videos too. So it's like you have a 2D me.
Gotta study, playing with you tube and blogger is too much fun.

More pics, this time of stuff. :)

I don't know why the Queen protects these, they're nasty beasts. This one kills the baby ducks in the pond at school. See? Evil things.
Second last exam tomorrow. Basics of Business for Brewers and Distillers. :) Looking forward to this one to say the least.
I have a funny feeling, by the way, that I write this blog to myself now. :) Oh well. I find it fun. Screw you if you don't read it! :PLater.

McEwans 80 Shilling (Warning, HEALTH RISK)
Nasty puke beer!
If you like beer with apple vinegar dumped in it then this drink is for you. Definately not for me...
Maybe a good choice if you're the DD and you're gonna have ONE pint because this crap takes all night to drink because it's SO NASTY!!!!!!
Just making sure you all stay healthy by avoiding garbage beer!

My Mommy and her friend Janet in Edinburgh... the story...

Flowers... pretty... at the Holyrood House Palace, Residence of the Queen in Scotland. Wandered through the gardens here, they were nice. Dunno what else to say... um, purple flowers. Donkey Kong. Etc...
I had a nice time this day, a Saturday, we even went to campus and saw the ponies and monkey puzzle trees.

This is an old chapel (?) maybe a cathedral (?) that was built into the palace. I'm not up on my Catholic architecture (don't think it was Protestant) but who the hell knows. If you do please correct me.
You can see Arthur's Seat behind the ruins.

A close-up of the archways on the far side of the ruins. You can see some of the palace window between the arches.
That's it... no pics of my Mom, I'm a dick... I didn't take any, just one video.
Oh well, we had a nice time.
The end.
But seriously, I love ya Mom, if this blog was a bit stupid then you can throw a book at my head the next time ya see me. So I suppose on the 17th of July. Get practicing that book toss!
Back to studying...
Syonara. Wish I could actually type that in Japanese.... hmmmm... one sec.
Goodbye - さようなら

I could have been dead it's been so long.
Heya,
Not dead. Just... preoccupied. Seeing Sharon, MSc thesis, beerfest yesterday. Kinda left this blog in the dust for a while. I've also been putting lots of effort into Facebook too, kinda prevented me from playing with this the last while.
Well, this'll be a shorty, I want to make my bed and sleep tonight. My Mom gets here tomorrow, gonna go surprise her and Janet at the airport tomorrow. :)
Nighty nite, enjoy the random pic I'm about to choose for y'all.
Bye!

North British Distilleries
Hey
hey everybody, went to North British Distilleries today. Just a 5 min walk from here.
Had a tour of the place, gotta say it's pretty cool. :) After the tour there was a quiz and the winner won a bottle of Famous Grouse "Finest Scotch Whisky". ;)
Well I figured I'd show these people what I know. ;) Ha ha, which I think isn't too much, yet. But anyways, I got the best mark out of the group and I gotta say this prize'll definately help me waste a night (and the next morning) next week. Well, we'll see, it's exam week... Maybe I'll take it to Haifa?
Whatever, as if it matters where it goes, I got a FREE BOTTLE of whisky today and that makes me HAPPY! HA HA HA. Ok, I want to eat, din din time for me. You guys still have 5 hours to go until you get to now in Toronto. :P
Mmmmm, chicken some kind of curry and basmati rice...

Pics tomorrow... and today I guess
Heya all!
Not much to report, been an unexciting last week excluding the fact it's been 10C for a week and sunny. Perfect running weather!
Going to Diageo's cooperage in Alloa tomorrow, gonna take some pics. I'll put those up sometime soon. We went to Berwick-on-Tweed a week ago to to see Simpson's Malt. I took a bunch of pics. Here are a few, they're kinda neat because everything was do damn huge. :)
The first pic is a steeping vessel, this is one of a set of 6 vessels. These ones are the largest in the world at the moment. The second pic is one of the BIG centrufugal fans Simpson's uses to draw moisture off their GKVs; germination and kilning vessels.
Not so exciting if you don't know what the hell this stuff is or what it does but I found these to be cool. Beer nerd...
So, more unexciting techie pics of a cooperage to come tomorrow. Yay.
I will be going to Rome soon and then back to Israel for 3 1/2 weeks so TRUST ME there'll be more of interest to come. ;) Ooo, I also found tons of new cool stuff here in Edinburgh to take pics of when I somewhat intentionally got lost on Friday. So I'll be heading back to those places soon to get s'more pics.
Alrighty-o, just before I head out and finish up my last little bit of work for the night I'm gonna post a little bit of nostalgia for myself, my backyard in Oakville. :)
Bye for now!

Here is the one true path, follow or feel the wrath of the great flying pasta dish!

Here He is, just after creating the world.

Also, become a pirate, it'll prevent global warming. And become a Pastafarian, OR FEEL HIS WRATH!!!

Ok, so I'm a bit distracted this morning. Oh well, one morning out of 7 is acceptable.
All photo creds to Wikipedia.

Ok, so I'm on Facebook now too. Been getting that thing up and running the last little while and I've been recovering from Cam's damage to my flat and my sanity! The guy broke two doors, flooded both toilets and then set the over on fire!!!!!!!!!!!
No, just kidding, I had a great time with Cam. We just generally got drunk with my friends at school, as well as a couple profs, and went to Stirling. For those of you not familiar with Scottish geography (including 99.9% of the world and all Americans) Stirling is where the William Wallace monument is. So we went there and to Stirling Castle.
Cam! You still have the pics! I wanna see them sometime. I'll email you, you'll get that faster.
Ok, so I'm 25 now, didn't go out yet, going out tomorrow. Going to eat Thai food, go get drunk, throw said Thai food up all over the streets of Edinburgh and create the world's first vomit rainbow. Dunno how, any advice on the rainbow?
The girls at the flat here made lasagna for my b-day, they also set up a treasure hunt with hints. I got a pint glass with a drunk Scottish guy on it, two beers, a chocolate bear (whom I've eaten) and a bunch of fridge magnets with Scottish sayings on em. Then we watched the Departed. Aptly named film! What else do you call a movie where everyone dies?
Hope I didn't spoil that for anyone. ;)
No pics at the moment. I like posting pics. See my facebook thingy for new pics of the school labs and a bunch of self-indulgent ME shots. :)
I'll post the link for those of ya who don't know it or who don't have facebook.
Cool, maybe I'll put up pics later tonight. SOmething to do when I'm too tired to think straight.
OH, happy b-day Dwayne! Well, I'm 4 days early at this point but I dunno if I'll post again by Mon.

Tennet's
Here's a little riddle:
What happens when you turn out little 2 hectolitre brew-lab at school into a multi hundred-thousand hectolitre brewery like Tennet's Caledonian Brewery in Glasgow???
Gi-normous mash filters... ours at school holds 42 kg of mash, you can see it in the last post. These HUGE buggers (and bigger exist) both hole 18 tonnes of mash!
Gah! That's nuts! And guess what??? Only ONE guy runs this brew house at a time!
AND...

Fermenters so big you can park a highway coach inside them! Ha ha, these weren't their biggest but they were still huge. Don't remember their capacity but it's in the upper hundreds on hl.
Imagine one rupturing! You'd drown a yeasty death!
Gonna steal more pics from Amanda, if there's something I think you'd all be interestd in I'll post it foschizzle. :P
Bye bye for now!

School
No vikings yet...
But pics of our labs at school.
This is the brewing lab, works in up to 2hl batches. The big square thing in front is the mash filter, the tall white thing is the lauter tun, the two smaller vessels to the left of the lauter tun are the mash mixer and cereal cooker and the turquoise thing on the far left is the mashing unit with a mono pump below it. You can't see any of the fermenters in this photo but they're all just to the left of the photo.
Not a lot else to say about these unless you've got specific questions. Feel free to ask, I like explaining how it all works.

This below is the distilling lab. We've got two stills, these are both pot stills made mostly of pyrex type glass (some copper in the stills). The copper you see, lots of it, doesn't actually contact the spirit inside. If it did the ratio of wash to copper would be incorrect. There are several copper rings that contact the spirit to replicate an appropriate spirit:copper ratio. Again, if you've got questions either post them below or get in touch with me however you usually would.

Alrighty, I'm off for now.

Tomorrow Vikings Invade my Flat
Not Norwegian Vikings but Shetland Vikings, the deadlier of the two. Everybody knows that...

Tomorrow is Up Helly Aa, a Shetlander's favourite night of the year to get drunk and run around with HUGE torches, so, obviously the girls here are holding an Edinburger Up Helly Aa.
Sounds sweet to me.

Anyways, gonna be pics, we have a ship being built in our living room and lots of Shetland food a cooking in the kitchen. And I have to share my bed with that guy up above... scary thoughts racing through my head... like what if he rolls over???
Ooo, I also made muffins today using spent grains from the mash filter at school. I used the stuff as a partial substitue for flour. Guess what? The girls like them... me, I can't decide.
Hey, Lauren, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the cook book! There's now a copy of "Now We're Cookin'" in Scotland. ;) Lookin forward to Cam visiting this weekend too, gonna head on out to the Whisky Society to make sure he enjoys his first night in Edi!
Alrighty, I gotta write more, lots to do, lots to do... and all I can think about is... well two things, going back to see ya Sharon and all the work I have to do. Ha ha, not really work here, I enjoy almost everything, even writing reports. Ha ha, I visit Tennet's in Glasgow on Weds too!
Alright, I should go... but blogging is fun.

Ugh, going to be a little productive... won't be tomorrow!
Later.
Daryl the Fruit,
Swashbuckling Pirate.
PS. Gonna need pirate backup tomorrow.

And here are the promised pics ;)
Alrighty, I'm back, I've woke up and I've almost pushed my way through my little hang-over.
This here is an Orthodox church, located right on the Sea of Galilee. We got there, the outside was full of gardens, all full of chickens, cats, peacocks and a sleepy dog. Oh yeah, there was a donkey somewhere too, you could here it making donkey sounds; anyways...
Here's the Western Wall or Wailing Wall, you choose the name you like... Cool place, never went up and touched it though, we stood back and watched the people there for a little while. Normally this place would have been crazy busy but we got there on an "off-day" I suppose.
Here we have the very place (supposedly, according to an American tourist we asked) the many a Christian believes Jesus was crucified. Lots of art all over the walls, lots of silver, lots of shrines, very crowded compared to other parts of the church. This place was big, some of the downstairs parts were more like caves though. Surprisingly, for its size it's really hard to find! We walked by it and then got sent back to what seemed like a little alleyway full of shops. Never would have thought that a church of this size and significance would have been down this little alleyway.
I have so many pics from Akko, it was hard to choose a favourite, and they're all so different... Oh well you'll all have to see them next time I visit Canada. But... this is from the wall at Akko, looking in towards the Old City there. Big mosque, went there, me and Ariel (Sharon's friend, and a cool guy) were gonna go in for a peek but it was Friday... there was a service and well... we just didn't feel right popping in at that moment. But, Akko was great, went to the souk, had wicked hummus, saw all the Crusader ruins was great. I can talk about all this stuff for far too long so I'll cut myself off here.
Oooo, just realized the Rome marathon starts/finishes at the Colosseum. Cooooolllllll.....
Anyways, the reason I'm back and blogging this fine morning is to post a couple pics from Israel. Damn good time, really had fun and can't wait to go back. Ok, ok, so... some pics.

Ok so this is main "room" of the church, we got there during a small service of some kind and snuck into the back of the room to watch. Nice people, no one cared that we were obviously there to take pics. Really have to say that this place made me decide that Orthodox churches are cooler.
Ok, what else...

The Old City of Jerusalem was cool, so much more there and in the rest of the city I'll have to go back and see. We went to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (where the J-man was supposedly crucified, got a pic, see later), walked around the city walls, saw lots of cats, wandered through the souk (a bit smelly), oooooo, and I had my first Turkish coffee! I liked it, gonna see where I can get one here in Edinburgh. :)
You can't see it in this photo but right above the wall is the Dome of the Rock, a Muslim holy site, supposedly their 3rd holiest. It is very "golden" lets say, big dome, lots of gold. Shiny too. I've got it on my desktop at the moment.
So, moving on...

Ok, hmmm, I also really liked Akko, going to put a pic from Akko up next. :) Ok, also really like the Golan Heights and the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) so I'll put a pic of the lake itself too.
Here comes Akko (Acre) is first place, followed by the Kinneret from the Golan Heights in
second...

Ok, last pic, the Kinneret aka the Sea of Galilee. As seen from the Golan Heights.

The view from up here were great, you could probably see north to Lebanon and then I think just about to Syria too. South of us was Jordan and to the west was the Sea of Galilee with Tiberias (the town in the pic) across the lake. Had a crazy lunch there in Tiberias. :) Sooo much food.
Beautiful weather, as you can see; didn't ever really have a bad day. Rained once I think... yeah, it did, but not even for long.
So in conclusion... ha ha ha, sounds like a poorly written lab report... I will go back there again. :) Not only was the place beautiful but Sharon's there; can't wait to go back and spend LOTS more time with ya Beautiful! :) Ok, well, I should get on with my day, lots to do!
Ooooo, just to show off before I go, my phone number in my made up
Engbrew words is: esef-sheva-sheva-shtiim-shesh-arba-arba-ehad-hamesh-shmone-hamesh.
Ok, I'm a nerd, I know it, and I really gotta go...
Later!
Dave
